About Me

I grew up in Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland, however most of my family are from Manuels, CBS. I have been living in Makkovik since 2003 when I started teaching here. My favorite subjects include Biology and History. I have a B.A. with a major in History and a minor in Biology, as well as a B. Ed. in Secondary/Intermediate from Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). Currently, I am also completing my Masters of Education in Educational Leadership through MUN.

Why I became a Teacher

I have always had in interest in teaching and helping students. If there is any way that I can help a child to succeed, I will do everything I can to help. As a teacher and principal, I get to experience our education system form multiple perspectives. I look forward to facing both the successes and challenges that lie ahead.

My Favorite Things about JCEM and Makkovik

Makkovik is such a beautiful and peaceful community. It is one of the few places in the world where you can just "hop" onto a snowmobile and go wherever you want. I have felt welcomed and at home here from day one. The staff at JCEM are wonderful and are willing to help whenever needed. The students show great potential and embrace an amazing and beautiful culture.

About Me

I graduated from Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2006 with a BEd. in Primary-Elementary with a Science focus. I accepted a replacement position that Fall at JCEM and fell in love with the community and people of Makkovik. The following summer I returned to Makkovik with my spouse. We have since make Makkovik our home and have two children of our own who attend JCEM.

Why I became a Teacher

I have always known working with children was in my future so I planned to go into Education at an early age. I feel it’s a wonderful thing to be able to help children discover new things and develop both academically and social-emotionally.

My Favorite Things about JCEM and Makkovik

While some aspects of belonging to a small school in an isolated community can be challenging, I believe the advantages are far greater. As a teacher you are able to develop relationships with children and their families that last a lifetime. The students have opportunities to work with others in all grades of our K-Level III school; learning, mentoring, and having fun while doing so.

About Me

I am the grades 1/2 teacher here at JCEM. I am from Makkovik and I've been teaching here ever since 2015. I have taught from grade 1 right up through grade 6.

Why I became a Teacher

As a teenager, I babysat a lot of children. I always found myself teaching them things, In grade 12, I asked my mom, "What should I do in college or university? I love to teach children! "What about a daycare operator?". She replied with, "What about a teacher?". It never crossed my mind to be a teacher, but that was it! As a teacher, I try to provide a fun, safe, and stimulating environment. I love technology and I LOVE to learn new and improved strategies and tools for teaching and learning!

My Favorite Things about JCEM and Makkovik

My favorite thing about JCEM is the fact that it is an all grade school. Each teacher will have an impact on each student and we can watch it happen from kindergarten to grad 12. I also love our house teams and the activities that come along with them!

About Me

I have lived in Makkovik all of my life with the exception of the years I worked towards my Post Secondary Education. I received my teaching degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Newfoundland. I started teaching at JCEM in 2001 and have been there ever since. I am married to Mr. Olsen Ford and we have five amazing children; Abby Syd, Seth, Jesse, and Emma. I enjoy running, hockey, broom-ball, reading, scrabble, and visiting with friends and family.

Why I became a Teacher

When I was a child, I loved pretending to be a teacher. My gram often tells me the story of how I would line up my dolls and use my chalkboard to play 'teacher' when I was a young. I also enjoyed doing things with children; taking care of them and showing them how to do new things. When the opportunity presented itself to attend university in a teaching program geared toward Northern areas, I took it! The rest is history!

My Favorite Things about JCEM and Makkovik

My favorite thing about our school is that it is an all-grade school. I get the privilege of seeing children grow up, from kindergarteners to grade 12 graduates. I also love the fact that everyone in our community, as well as our school, are very accepting of each others differences. We all feel very safe here at JCEM.

About Me

My name is Hulda Rice, but everyone calls me by my nickname, Sista. I became an Inuktitut Teacher in September 2003. I love to sew, embroider, and draw. My hobby right now is to play volleyball in the woman's league every Sunday. My favorite season is winter because you can go on ski-doo to other communities or even to the cabin. There's also boil-ups, wooding, and ice fishing.

Why I became a Teacher

I became an Inuktitut teacher because I love to teach, as well as learn. I love my culture because without it I would be lost. It enriches me, and as well, it gives me a sense of belonging. Even though most times people are too shy to speak Inuktitut, I encourage it very much. I feel Inuit, in general, are very enriched in our traditional knowledge. For example, many of the tools that were invented by Inuit are still used today!

My Favorite Things about JCEM and Makkovik

I love the staff at JCEM and the people we get to work with. It makes your job a whole lot easier. We all help each other out in times of need and just help out in general. We are all trying to make JCEM a better place to learn and to teach our students. My favorite thing about Makkovik is the friendliness of the people. I was born in Makkovik and grew up here. I love everything about it; I don't think I would want to live anywhere else. The people here celebrate their heritage and culture at every occasion. Even though our language is not as strong as other communities like Nain and Hopedale, we still work to keep it alive. My hope is that we keep striving to make it even stronger, and hopefully, a few years down the road it will become more predominantly used here in Makkovik.
